Getting a perfect (fake) beach wedding tan

Beach wedding tan

Getting the perfect beach wedding tan is not as hard as you might think, and if you are having a summer wedding and you are having it on the beach, there is no excuse for being pasty! If you do not have time to build up a tan gently over a couple of weeks, then self tan or spray on tan is your best bet. They say that wearing a fake tan is like buying a Gucci bag on the internet – you don’t know it is fake until the deal is sealed!

Try one of the new daily moisturizing body lotions that gradually adds colour for a very natural looking beach wedding tan. This is easy enough to incorporate into your everyday routine. These formulas combine a reduced level of dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose found in conventional tanners (1 – 3 % instead of up to 8%) with hydrating ingredients to make skin one tone darker after four to five applications.

The high level of DHA in regular self-tanners can be drying, whereas these new lotions can be used instead of your everyday body lotion. On the day of the wedding when you may want a deeper colour, Scott Barnes, the makeup pro responsible for Jennifer Lopez’s trademark sheen, suggests enhancing your beach wedding tan with a liquid bronzer.

Most of these products are available in light and medium shades. Choose the one that best describes your existing skin tone, not the level of tan you would like to achieve. This will result in a natural result that complements your complexion.

Make sure you still use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or higher as most of these products do not protect against damaging and ageing UV rays.

Below follows few pointers on how to apply your fake tan.

Here is a step by step on how to get a streak-free beach wedding tan:

1. Exfoliate your entire body. This prevents dry patches from absorbing the colour unevenly. Shave or de-hair your legs in your usual manner. Scrub your body with an exfoliating body glove or use a gentler, creamy body scrub with moisturizing benefits. If your elbows and knees feel rough or look ashy, rug them with half a lemon sprinkled with course salt to slough off dead skin cells. Rinse and dry. Cool off for about five minutes before applying the tanning product.

2. Squirt some tanner into the palm of your hand. Rub your palms together and massage into your skin from your ankles to your neck (going lightly over the tops of your feet, knees and elbows). Make sure to wash your hands and scrub your nails. There is nothing worse than the dead giveaway of orange palms! Once your hands are dry, add a small drop to the tops of your hands and rub them together. Allow some time to dry (+/- 5 – 10 mins) before getting dressed.

3. On the day of the wedding use a liquid bronzing makeup to deepen the colour. Put a small blob on your palms and lightly skim your legs arms and chest in long even strokes. Dilute with moisturizer and feather toward your jawline. Allow 20 minutes to dry before putting on your dress.

This is a very easy way to achieve the perfect beach wedding tan with a minimum amount of fuss and time. Enjoy!
